Links Editor's URLs Builder performs two major tasks:
  • Tag URLs with Google Analytics' tracking parameter value in bulk
  • Clean URLs in bulk

1. Overall View


1.1 There are 4 steps to execute a Tag command.
  1. Select the cells contain URLs that you want to tag
  2. Click "Tag URLs" button on the ribbon and fill up the parameter value in the dialog box
  3. Click on "Options" button to decide the output location
  4. Click "Tag" button to execute command

1.2 There are 2 steps to execute a Clean URLs command
  1. Select the cells contain URLs that you want to clean
  2. Click "Clean URLs" button on the ribbon and choose the URLs part that you want to remove

2. Tagging URLs


2.1 Tag
Step 1: Select the URLs
  1. If you want to use the URL or URLs in the worksheet cells, just checked "Use URL(s) from selected cells" check box. Then select the cell or cells that contain the URLs you want to tag. This is the quicker way as compared to the next one
  2. When you tag one URL, you can choose to place the URL at the "Website URL" text box in the "Bulk URL(s) Tagging" userform. You unchecked the "Use URL(s) from selected cells" check box and fill up the text box with a URL

Step 2: Fill up parameters value
  1. Campaign Source, Campaign Medium and Campaign Name are compulsory values
  2. You can opt to convert special characters into valid ASCII format recognizable by web server. You checked the "Encode/Decode URLs' special characters while Tag/Pick" at the bottom of the "Bulk URL(s) Tagging" userform

Step 3: Decide Output location
You can either click on the "Options" button in the userform or the "Output Options" button on the ribbon. They both load the same "Output Options" userform. You have 3 location choices:
  • Overwrite the selected cells
  • Place output at right of selected cells, OR
  • Place output at left of selected cells

Step 4: Click "Tag" button in the userform to execute


2.2 Pick
You can extract the parameter values of an URL easily by select the cell that contains the URL and click "Pick" button of the userform.

You can choose whether to decode the encoded URLs to its original characters or just pick the value as per the encoded format. You checked or unchecked the "Encode/Decode URLs' special characters while Tag/Pick" at the bottom of the "Bulk URL(s) Tagging" userform.

2.3 Encoding and Decoding Special Characters
This Add-In only encodes/decodes common special characters found on English keyboard. It does not encode/decode foreign language characters. Below is a list of special characters that encoded/decoded by this Add-In

3. Remove and Clean


You can choose to remove parts of URLs

  • Protocol, i.e. http://, https://, ftp://, etc.
  • Paramenters, i.e. Query String
  • Fragment, i.e. named anchor


4. Formulas Available


4.1 A list of formulas to extract various parts of URL
  • =wWebAddress(url)
  • =wHostName(url)
  • =wPath(url)
  • =wParameter(url)
  • =wUtmParameter(url)
  • =wNonUtmParameter(url)
  • =wFragment(url)
You need to replace the url value in the formula bracket with the actual urls like:
  1. "http://ww2.wordz.co/p/links-editors.html?utm_source=desktop&utm_medium=gift%20software&utm_content=encoding&utm_campaign=wordz%20urls%20builder%20160" , OR
  2. a cell reference like C2, in which C2 contain a URL like above


5. Output Option


You can either click on the "Options" button in the userform or the "Output Options" button on the ribbon. They both load the same "Output Options" userform. You have 3 location choices:
  • Overwrite the selected cells
  • Place output at right of selected cells, OR
  • Place output at left of selected cells
Both Tag and Clean URLs use this Output Options useform to decide location.
